Oral Exam for Oral Cancer Screening

Escondido dentistNo single oral exam or oral cancer screening test is proven to reduce the risk of dying of oral cancer. But, did you know that in our office, Dr Mastrovich and our Escondido dental hygiene team screen for oral cancer during all dental and dental hygiene appointments.

During the oral exam, Dr Mastrovich and our hygienists look over the inside of your mouth to check for red or white patches or mouth sores. Using gloved hands, they will also feel the tissues in your mouth to check for lumps or other abnormalities.  In addition to checking inside the mouth, they also palpate the outside of the face and the neck area to check for lumps, bumps, or any abnormalities

Many people have abnormal sores in their mouths, with the great majority being noncancerous and an oral exam can’t determine which sores are cancerous and which are not.

If by chance we do find an unusual sore, further testing may be suggested to determine its cause. The only way to definitively determine whether it is oral cancer is to remove some abnormal cells and test them for cancer in a procedure called a biopsy.

You will be pleased to know that the American Dental Association recommends all adults undergo periodic oral exams when they visit the dentist. The American Cancer Society recommends discussing oral cancer screening, as well, when you visit your dentist. We all have your best interests at heart and strive to keep you as healthy as possible.teeth cleaning

Finding a Dentist: Difference between a DDS and a DMD

difference dds dmdIn our ongoing “Ask the Dentist” series we are often asked, “What is the difference between a DDS and a DMD?” As you’re looking to find a dentist you may notice that while most are listed with a “DDS”, some may be listed as “DMD”. What does this distinction mean and how is it important in your search for the perfect dentist?

You may be surprised to find that they both mean the same thing. The dentist graduated from an accredited dental school. Both the DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) and DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine) are actually the same degrees, so, dentists who have a DMD or DDS both have the very same education.

Why the two distinctions? Harvard University! In 1867 Harvard University added a dental school to their curriculum and they only grant degrees in Latin. They chose not to adopt the D.D.S. degree because the Latin translation was Chirurgae Dentium Doctoris, or C.D.D., and they felt that was cumbersome. A Latin scholar was consulted who suggested the ancient Medicinae Doctor be prefixed with Dentariae. This is how the D.M.D. or “Dentariae Medicinae Doctor” degree was started.

The important point is that it takes three or more years of undergraduate education plus four years of dental school to graduate and become a general dentist. After this dentists must also pass both a rigorous national written exam and a state or regional clinical licensing exam in order to practice. Plus, in order to keep their licenses, a dentist must continue their education requirements for the remainder of their careers to stay up to date on the latest scientific and clinical developments.

We hope this is helpful when choosing your next dentist. If you are looking for a dentist in Escondido, we’d love to hear from you.

Choosing a Dentist (Part 1)

Dr Charles Mastrovich
Dr. Charles Mastrovich

We are often asked by our Escondido patients who have received a job transfer, “How do I find an expert dentist like you in my new location?” We do make an effort to network with quality specialists and general dentists we know via lecturing in other cities. However, that does not always produce a connection, and when that is the case we have several steps we recommend to our relocating patients. (By the way, these steps have proven helpful for choosing a new dentist even when patients aren’t relocating.)

  1. Make a list of dental specialists from an online search (or yellow pages) with several from each of the following specialties: periodontists, oral surgeons and endodontists.
  2. Call these specialist offices and ask for the names of 2-3 general dentists their office has experienced as being of high quality (“Dentists you would feel positive about sending your mom or your brother to for treatment”).
  3. After making these calls, one or more dentists names will be recommended more than once.
  4. Explore the websites of these dentists who have been recommended by more than one source to see which feel like a good fit and these are the dental offices you will call with your personal list of questions.
  5. List your personal priority questions specific to your dental needs and ask the same questions of each office when you call.
  6. This is a time to factor in the question many ask: why not just choose one off the list provided by my insurance? While dental insurance is a helpful benefit, it is typically only a portion of the dental health picture and is best as one factor but not as the only factor.

Of course, each search will be unique to you and your needs and requirements, and this is a strong foundation to build on finding the right dentist for you.

Welcome Tour of Our Escondido Dental Office

Debra 2012

Join us for a Welcome Tour of our Escondido dental office that our team shares with every new patient. This is a virtual preview of what we believe will transform your dental experience. We are excited for you to experience the full tour, new patient appointment and what many of our our patients describe as ‘finally finding our dental home’.

We designed our office with your comfort in mind because we want your dental experiences to be positive.  Your tour begins with our reception area where you will be greeted by Debra, Joy and our front office team members.  They will show you the ‘library’ room with desk and wifi where you can work on your computer or read a variety of magazines prior to your appointment.  From there you will see our team licenses and photos, notices of compliance (with government safety regulations), our hygiene and operative rooms, view our sterilization center and then begin your new patient experience in our consultation room.

One of our assisting team, Sheila or Lori, will continue with you in the consultation room and review your dental and medical histories to establish your baseline as a foundation from which we build forward toward your desired dental goals.

Look no further for artistic dentistry in Escondido

artistic dentistryLearning from the masters has been a life theme for Dr. Mastrovich, and it is a foundational piece in how he helps every patient achieve his or her desired goals for the appearance (smile) and function (chewing) of their teeth. This ‘universal’ principal, referred to since Greek and Roman times by many different names, the Golden Proportions, Golden Ratio, Divine Proportions is the vertical to horizontal ratio that makes a face, a smile, a piece of architecture or art unconsciously pleasing to the human eye. An everyday case in point: pull out your wallet and look at your credit cards. They utilize this principal, in order to be both visually and tactilely appealing to use. Dr. Mastrovich utilizes this principal as he plans dental cases for the best possible results, and even incorporated it into his prior logo 15 years ago. The calipers in the logo represented his measurements for these esthetically pleasing smiles.

Having her dentist be both clinician and artist is very important for Lynn, who is both a mathematician by education and an artist and painter by passion. She happily relates her experience as his patient, recognizing his unique skill set and expertise in artistic and highly functional dentistry.

If a beautiful smile is important to you, call us to learn more.
